Frequently Asked Questions

  • What causes varicose veins?

Varicose veins develop due to various factors that differ among individuals. Common contributing factors include: family history, female hormonal influences (both natural and prescription), pregnancy, physical trauma, advancing age, excess weight, and occupations requiring prolonged standing. For spider veins specifically on the face, extensive sun exposure is a known contributor, highlighting another benefit of sunscreen use, especially in intense climates like South Florida. Varicose veins are particularly common, affecting half of all people over age 50, with women experiencing them more frequently than men.

  • Why treat varicose veins if they don't hurt?

Even if varicose veins don’t cause pain, they should be treated because they can lead to serious complications including phlebitis, thrombosis (blood clots), spontaneous bleeding, and skin ulcers. Additionally, without treatment, smaller abnormal veins may increase in number over time, which is associated with worsening symptoms.

  • How many treatments are necessary to remove varicose veins?

The number of treatments needed varies based on the severity and extent of each individual’s varicose vein condition. A thorough examination by the experienced clinical team determines the most appropriate treatment approach and schedule tailored to each patient’s specific needs.

  • What insurance options are available?

The Kimmel Institute accepts coverage from Medicare, managed care, and many private insurance plans for their vein treatments. Their staff works directly with your insurance provider to help minimize your personal financial responsibility.

  • What is the difference between spider veins and varicose veins?

Spider veins are small, thin blood vessels visible through the skin, appearing as red or blue webs primarily on the legs and face. Varicose veins are larger, swollen, and twisted veins that protrude from the skin surface, usually occurring in the legs. While spider veins are mainly a cosmetic concern, varicose veins can cause symptoms like aching, heaviness, and swelling that may require medical treatment to prevent vein disease progression.

  • What happens during a varicose vein consultation?

During your initial consultation, our vascular specialists will review your medical history and symptoms, perform a physical examination focusing on your leg veins, and conduct an ultrasound vein mapping procedure to assess blood flow and venous insufficiency. This comprehensive evaluation allows us to diagnose the underlying cause of your varicose veins and recommend the most appropriate minimally invasive treatment options tailored to your specific condition.

  • How soon can I return to normal activities after varicose vein treatment?

Recovery time varies depending on the procedure, but most patients can resume light activities immediately following minimally invasive varicose vein treatments. Walking is encouraged to promote circulation, but strenuous exercise should be avoided for 1-2 weeks. Compression stockings are typically required for a short period to optimize results and minimize complications. Most patients experience minimal pain and can return to work within 24-48 hours.

  • Which varicose vein treatment is right for me?

The best treatment for your varicose veins depends on several factors including the size and location of affected veins, symptom severity, and underlying venous reflux patterns. Our South Florida vascular specialists may recommend sclerotherapy for spider veins, laser ablation for larger varicose veins, or ambulatory microphlebectomy for bulging surface veins. We customize each treatment plan based on comprehensive diagnostic testing to ensure optimal results with minimal recovery time.

  • Can varicose veins return after treatment?

While treatments can successfully eliminate existing varicose veins, they do not prevent new ones from forming in the future. The underlying factors that contributed to your original vein issues, such as genetics, aging, or lifestyle, may still be present. Following post-treatment care, maintaining a healthy weight, staying physically active, and wearing compression stockings when recommended may help reduce the risk of recurrence and support long-term vein health.

  • What lifestyle changes can help manage varicose veins?

Alongside professional treatment, several lifestyle modifications can help manage varicose veins and prevent worsening symptoms. Regular exercise promotes healthy circulation, while maintaining a healthy weight reduces pressure on leg veins. Elevating your legs when resting, avoiding prolonged standing or sitting, and wearing compression stockings can alleviate discomfort. For optimal vein health, we recommend low-impact activities like walking, swimming, or cycling rather than high-impact exercises that stress leg veins.
